Project 3: What I've learned

After watching my peers present for Project 3, I learned about the importance of preparation and detail. When preparing, there were a few groups that make multiple mock-ups of their design, each with a different rhetorical exigence for their audience. The design features reflected different effects they wanted to have on their audience. For example, one particular group made a law firm three different designs for flyers they were going to hand out. Each design had a different impact visually, and thus created a different representation of the business in the audience’s perspective. My idea of text genres was also broadened by my classmates, as some of their “texts” were not conventional. One group designed a food drive box to spread the word about their business. This was a creative way to capture the attention of the audience. Many groups were constrained by time, as they would have liked to have more time with either their text or its circulation. I learned the importance of planning precisely to maximize impact. Circulation was the keyword that came up the most, as different genres circulate in different ways. Through collaborating, we are better able to combine the business’ knowledge of their audience with our design features to come up with the best strategy for circulation. For our own group, I would have discussed with the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation where they have gotten their most successful advertising from. This way we can add to and expand on their already successful platforms. We had used Facebook for circulation, however, I would have liked to have gotten more statistics on what has been most beneficial for them in the past. Next time, I would deepen my research of the organization’s audience to get a more rounded picture of what appeals to them. I also took from other groups that using both in-person groups/organizations and online networks that you are already apart of is a great way to spread awareness of your text, and get the business/exigence out in the open. Timely preparation, attention to minute details, and observation of past successes will help to optimize your texts potential!
